We are still here! Just not where we used to be.

The absence of blog posts for almost two weeks is because we moved to a new apartment. We'll resume posting soon. For now, I'll say that Loki handled the move well, and we enjoy our new place.

On the advice of the nutritionist, he is now getting a couple types of baby food, mixed with milk. Loki has put on a few ounces, and is now above 11 pounds! (He has been in the ten pound zone for two months.) He is still at the tenth percentile in weight for 24-week-preemies.

We are searching for a pure prune baby food to help his digestion. Most are mixed with apples or similar, but we want to add only one new food at a time to his diet. Any recommendations?

I have found this frustrating as well. So many jarred baby foods are mixed with things, so how are we supposed to introduce one new thing at a time? We are trying to stick with organic and the only prune/plum ones by Earth's Best are mixed with oatmeal, brown rice, etc...Let me know if you find any alternatives! Happy Baby and Tasty Baby make good frozen organic food with only one ingredient but not prune/plum. You might have to make it yourself!

Hey,

i knew you were going to post after my serious complaint on the neglect of the blog! ;-)
in return, i wrote a new Lova story on mine. The non-dutchies can read there that she is a wonderful tough toddler and enjoy the nice picture of her feeding the chicken. But before this becomes a pro-lova talk, I wish you a lot of fun with the spitting little Lokiboy. hope he will start to enjoy the food from this perspective (at least he can do something with it!) I suppose this experience is also very important for him no matter what happens in the next medical/feeding step. Once he is six months in corrected age, he may enjoy the Rapley method. O gosh, I am getting too far ahead, one day at a time. Remember you're great in all you have acheived already!

Love,

Kyra

If you can find the food that the prunes are mixed with by itself, add that food first (for instance applesauce). Then you can add the applesauce/prune next, which would then be adding the prunes as the next food. Not the best solution if you are in a hurry to add the prunes, but better than nothing. So glad you like the new apartment. It sounds perfect. Happy to hear Loki likes the new place too. Give him kisses from Nana and Papaw.

And finally, my 2 cents...I learned to add thickit to organic prune juice to a nectar thick consistency, and feed it that way. It adds a few extra calories, and isn't an ideal solution, but it leaves the liquid biologically available, so helps out with liquid intake(for Loki's kidney to flush out really well!) and the desired OUTPUT! You can buy thickit or thicken at Walgreen's, at Kaiser, and at Longs. I know it's not pure or wholesome but it does open up a lot more possibilities and it is not related to allergies. It let Bri start taking liquids via spoon and cup.

I made food and rice cereals for the girls from scratch, that way I knew exactly what they were getting. And I think that it tastes markedly better than the jarred stuff. To make prunes, buy them in bulk, boil some water, stick one in to soften for 10 minutes or so, and then puree it up in either a baby food mill or a food processor (the latter will give you a smoother consistency). You can add water or milk too. If you want more info on making your own food, email me and I'll give you the full 411. It's really not hard and doesn't take too much time, which I know is precious for you.

If you want to go the home-made route I can make you some trial purees, too - prune, avocado, apple, whatever.

Hoi lieve Lijn, Jesse en Loki,
Veel geluk in jullie nieuwe huis. En als ik alle stukjes hierboven lees: jullie vriezer ligt binnenkort vol met smakelijke babyhapjes.
Alle goeds!

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
