People magazine on micro-preemies

For the Dutchies reading, People magazine is a weekly that mainly has celebrity news and gossip, but also a couple "human interest" stories of inspiring (uh...) people. This week, it featured six adult micro-preemies. Here is a scan. As always, you can click on an image for a larger version.

From my slightly biased European point of view the article looks very American and kind of corny. But, hey: It IS amazing what seemingly hopeless situations can turn into. Just for a second think back at the scary moments of premature labor, and then look at little Loki and how far he has come already.

Very inspiring. Who knows what he will be - a math geek or a cheer leader?

Yes, it absolutely is very corny in an American way. But I believe that - if you can put that cheesiness aside - the article has an important message for parents of children with medically difficult beginnings.

Thank you very much for posting this article! I have been trying to track down this magazine. I have 5 year old twin girls born at 25 weeks who had less than a 30% chance of survival. I guess no one thought to tell them that because they are both perfect in every way. Thank you God! Christina

It's nice to see something in the media about our littlest ones. Very little is often printed about the plight of our micro preemies and the hope that they can and will survive and thrive. I'm mom to 25 weeker triplets who are now 2 1/2 yrs old.

And what would the world do without good old American cheesiness? (Says the American :-)

Hi Christina and Keira,
Have you seen the inspire.com/groups/preemie website? Maybe of interest!

Thanks for commenting! It is great to hear from parents of older former preemies!

p.s. Mascha, I'd like the cheerleader :-)

Given all the bouncing and dancing you two are doing, my money is on the cheerleader too...or a jockey!

Hey, we gotta get our sensory input where we can, right? Good luck with the moving. You two must be SO tired.

So I know I’m super late to this but I am American and this exact magazine was delivered to my house and brought to me by my husband the day I was put in the hospital in early labor with my 22 week 5 day pregnancy- May 7, 2009. The issue date though was May 18, 2009 which is my daughters birthday. I made it to 24 weeks! This magazine filled me with so much hope at a time when I had none. Statistics were grim and I honestly and only heard of one 28 weeker that has serious long term problems.

My daughter is now 11 and doing great. Total opposite of what we were warned about. She wears strong glasses but can see- you would never even know unless we told you.

Totally trippy hope things work out.

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
