Day 49: Seven Weeks Old

Today our tiny Loki Sky is seven weeks old outside the womb, amazing! He weighed in on 1290 grams and cries like a big boy, and yes big boys DO cry. I can hear him very clearly from his isolet, which at the same time is wonderful and heartbreaking. He is developing distinct cries. "I am having a tummy ache," is the most difficult one to endure because it is very clear he is in pain. It sounds a bit like the "I am drowning in the water from my SiPAP machine." Although I am still getting to know the water cry, as this one fortunately was less common until the machine started collecting more water yesterday. I hear "I am soooo annoyed with you right now," when I change his diaper or take his temp because I am not as fast as his nurses. This one is accompanied by some pretty vigorous arm and leg movements, all with the purpose of pushing my hands out of the isolet, or at least out of Loki's proximity. And one cry that is not as clear yet, is the "please feed me some of that milk" cry. The latter as the more rhythmic newborn sound and can be solved briefly sometimes by giving him a pacifier.

As we are missing dad, we are spoiled by friends and have wonderful, healthy meals, snacks and company. It is amazing to see how many people have made themselves available, and it is so great to not have to worry about food, some company or help with groceries. It feels wonderful to be able to say that I don't need all the help, because so much is offered. You all rock!!

Finally, as I checked in with Amber before taking the first nap of the night, she said Loki was chilling in his isolet, looking around calmly with his big eyes wide open. I love that Zen look on his Little face. Suzan's and Karin's meditations and all the prayers must be getting through to him, THANKS!

Big big baby boy. Muus accidentily typed BB on the laptop, which is no coincidence, I think. Where did Sarah get those tiny clothes? You look so real!

Great to read that Loki is gaining weight and is making you so happy. I wish once again to be able to do some groceries for you, or bring you a preemie christmas tree from our nursery with tinety little disco balls in it.

xx and Love Kyra

That's funny! I am curious what kind of character he will develop! That is always so special! To be able to follow the development of such a little person into someone with his own particular character.

Love,
Suzanna

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
