Morning 52: Busy day

Loki had a busy day yesterday, and it showed at the end of the day. He seems to be in between sizes for his masks, prongs and hats to keep it all in place. It moved out of place, would be put back on or in his nose, which he absolutely hates, and move a few minutes later again. So on and off for hours he was handled. Towards the end of the day shift he just so had it, cried and pushed the thing off again and again and again. As Janet gave him a little break with some oxygen close to his face instead of directly blowing into his nose, he seemed so much more comfortable. As my friend Emma was here, she actually was the first lucky visitor to see him without anything on his head and face. He even smiled as she took a peek.

Our little guy did so well with just a bit of oxygen that Blanca decided to give him a break on the nasal cannula when I held him. He did well for approximately 1.5 hour, and then showed his exhaustion from working hard and being handled all day. He needed a long time, mainly the whole evening shift, to recover from this very busy, busy day. He liked to be swaddled tightly, and since this made a bit hot with his outfit on, he is now resting in his diaper and nicely swaddled, while satting well at 24 percent oxygen.

Hopefully throughout the day today he will continue to do better with his CPAP devices and being swaddled, so he will be all ready to meet is aunty Marieke, who will arrive in the afternoon.

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
