Day 56: Working out the tube

Loki weighs 1535 grams today and although maybe not quite chubby enough to completely fill up his new outfit, length wise he just fits in it. On the first picture you can see how Loki works out his feeding tube with his tongue. He is very crafty at pushing the tube out of his mouth, after which he often loops his little fingers around it and finishes the job with his hands. Although these tubes are meant to stay in for a week, he often needs it put back in several times a day. I wish I could explain to the little trickster he is creating more misery for him self.

On Tuesday Aunty Marieke is leaving already. We're sad about that, because it is great to have her here. However, dad is coming back and I am very excited to see him again, it is not really fun, 12 days without him. I really think he is going to be blown away about how much our little guy has grown. He is on his way to four pounds now!

Watch what I do with my tongue:

I am more alert and like to look around when I am well rested:

When I look around my eyes tend to cross a little bit:

CUTE! You want him to fight his tubes. It means he is strong and feisty. It will in the end help him grow, inspite of temporary misery.

Go, Loki.

Hoi mom,

I am sooo happy to see Loki is getting stronger and doing well. He cries really nice, soothes himself, and puts his hands in the right spots when on mom's chest. Yay! And his face is so plumpy!
PS - I have some home-made yogurt I made if you'd like it. Plain. Organic.

Hi Marieke, Lijn and sweet little Loki!
Such nice pictures, so much progress - so far away from here. I miss you! We were lucky and happy to have dad here for some time. We really enjoyed that! But he will be home soon, and that is where he belongs. Loki looks so irresistably cute, he is adorable! I can hardly wait to hold him when he is at home sometime soon. Love to you all,
oma Heleen.

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
