Day 51 and morning 52: Three pounds

As I just spoke with the nurse during my midnight pump, I cannot ignore the fact that our little big guy hit the three pound mark. He weighed in this morning/night at 1360 grams, what a big, strong boy he is.

Loki also took a huge step yesterday my moving from SiPAP to CPAP. If I understand it correctly, he gets oxygen and a minimal amount of pressure inside his lungs to ensure his lungs do not collapse as he breaths out, instead of giving him a minimal number of supported breaths. He did incredibly well with this yesterday, and so far overnight. In fact, so far he is doing better with this, than he has done on the SiPAP, which is somewhat odd. Loki has been needing less oxygen, somewhere from between 21 (room air) to 25, needing mostly 23/23 percent. This means they will start sprinting soon. Sprinting is the term used to explain the process of getting used to the nasal cannula. This device blows extra oxygen into the lungs, but does not maintain any pressure, nor does it help Loki to breath. It is the last step before being completely on his own. When on the nasal cannula a whole new world opens up for us. He will have an NG-tube (feeding tube in his nose), which means we can start practicing breastfeeding! I cannot wait!

We had another picture moment with Amber today, which was a lot of fun and gave Loki a little break from his mask. He opened his eyes wide for Amber, to take a good look at the pretty face behind the sweet voice, you can see the pictures below. Unfortunately my camera quit working by the time he was wearing his warm night gown. Our little man is very alert during the evenings, so I should probably learn to stay up later. I am not an evening person by any stretch of the imagination. Oh well, I guess our handsome dude may change that!

Finally, as we are still missing dad tons and tons, we are very excited about my sister arriving tomorrow!! Can't wait for Loki to meet his tante (aunty).

Hi Loki and mom! Great news again, and great photos too. We enjoyed them so much. Dressed up he really looks like a big boy. Once we saw him on your tummy we do realize how small Loki still is, although he has grown so much. So keep on going like this, beautifull grandson! Oma Heleen & Opa Frits.

Loki, Wow, so many accomplishments in one day! Moving to CPAP, on low oxygen, and up to three pounds! This must be due to all the adoring attention from Mom and the great care from the nurses. I wish I could be there to see the changes more closely, but I am grateful that I can follow through Mom's stories, photos, images, and others' comments here. Now, I get to print some new images for Opa and Oma and me!

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
