Cuddling with Margaret

We were lucky again yesterday, Nurse Margaret came to visit us after her shift at Alta Bates. She brought amazing food and lots of cuddles for Loki. Loki got lucky because he was awake and got his feeding when Margaret was there, so he had a chance to cuddle up with her. It is so wonderful to have our primaries visit and be able to pretend like we are in the comfort zone for a bit of the day! I must say though that we are getting used to being at Children's. It will never feel like Alta Bates because of the many reasons I have brought up before, but we have had some great nurses take care of Loki. Since we are now paired with the baby next to us, who has some solid primaries, we have the same nurse for the third day in a row during the day. That feels much better.

Already full with milk after the breast? That's the question:

Maybe a burp will come out:

Safe and sound in Margaret's arms:

On another note, we heard that the baby who moved from Children's back to Alta Bates, has been moved back to Children's again. The story is quite scary and I am sharing it with you, just so everybody can understand why a simple cold means serious danger. The baby was released from the hospital around the due date, after having been there for 2.5 months. A few days later he was readmitted because of a cold virus (which happened to be RSV). After about 1.5 week he got so sick that he needed to be reintubated. Because of his severe illness he needed to be moved back to Children's. He is so sick that they do not know whether he will survive. So please, please please, continue to make sure to let us know when you have the slightest sense of feeling off. The littlest cough to adults, or even kids, can mean a life threatening situation for Loki. I hate to keep bringing it up, but knowing this mom and her baby brings the reality of how fragile our little guy is all too close to home. Loki was born at a younger age, and his lungs are in worse shape. We may seem radical, overly protective or paranoid, but in the end it is rooted in a realistic threat. Please forgive me and try to understand when I ask you to wash your hands, maybe stop by on a later date or don't hug or kiss you hello and goodbye. It is not you, it is my love for our handsome little boy!

What amazingly cute pictures! And on the cold/virus front, I totally understand where you are coming from. The few days before I last visited I was prophylactically taking zinc and Airborne to make sure I didn't get a cold - and I didn't. Maybe it's luck, but I'll continue that regimen each time I hope to visit. -Jennifer M.

Really great to see Janet and Margaret! But I am so jealous that they get to hold sweet baby Loki. I will wait a little longer - in the mean time I just watch the video (of Loki with his pacifier) over and over again. He is so so cute. Glad things are going better at CHO. A big thank you to all the nurses at Alta Bates for being there for my precious little dude. hugs and kisses.......nana

This is why I haven't visited--Loki needs his Mama and Papa, and his health care providers, but really shouldn't encounter anymore germs than necessary. A student at my son's school has MRSA, the antibiotic resistant staph infection so prevalent in hospitals and schools--so while Nate is FINE, I'm just not going to risk it. I too look longingly at his pictures and videos, but I know I can see him up close when he is stronger. Have they talked about doing synergis with him to prevent RSV? Brianna had a full winter of this and since RSV went around Project PRider that winter and she did NOT get it, I think it helped. But it is a once a month shot...
Anyhow, sending a virtual hug for you all.

Dear mom,
Don't feel guilty bringing the germ/virus issue up all the time. You need to! This story brings you reality. And since you're a professional germ buster now you know what to do. It is so good to see little babylokisky at the pictures. Please let him stay as healthy as possible. Mom and dad, you don't know how much I admire you two for your strenghth, braveness and courage. You must be exhausted. Hele dikke knuffel zonder germs X

Dear mom,

You are a very good mother, protecting your little guy from life threathening situations. Very good to make everybody realize how innocent looking little colds and other virusses are dangerous. we will remember this for sure and tell you whenever we could meet. It must be difficult for you to have to be so cautious for the coming period. We wish you a lot of strength to be able to keep in good spirit while protecting your son!

Dear Loki,

You look cuter by the day! We wish we don't have colds when we'll be able to meet you, as we would love to cuddle and hold you! We love your pictures and are very happy that we can read how are doing everyday. By the way, we have a very nice gift for you. We'll ask Kyra to bring it to you.

Much love also to dad,
Johan, Suzanna and Phileine

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
