No news is frustrating

Apparently the specialist faculty met today, but did not yet make a decision about Loki - or at least we've not heard of a decision. Perhaps Monday? In the end, a delayed decision won't impact when any surgery occurs, as Loki's lungs are becoming stronger each day, and the doctors will likely want to take their time before the surgery for this reason. But of course, we are anxious to know.

The good news, or at least the not-bad news, is that Loki's urinary tract culture has not come back positive for infection after 48 hours.

He has put on some weight, and is up to 2600 grams, which is almost 5 pounds + 12 ounces. That's as heavy as he has ever been, except the day before his surgery, when he was very puffy with excess fluid.

It appears that Loki is getting better at breastfeeding. Based on a weight measurement, he took in perhaps 28 mL this evening, whereas a full feeding is 50 mL. However, this measurement is potentially inaccurate for a number of reasons.

Another baby shower was held in Loki's honor, this time in the Netherlands. We heard reports and saw some photos that Oma Heleen, Tante Marieke, Tante Hanneke, Kyra, Maaike, Greet, and possibly others? attended. This is very cool, and we are extremely grateful to the organizer(s) and attendees. We are looking forward to hearing all about it on the phone and when Kyra is here in the US in a few weeks!

Lieve mama en papa,
Good news, no germ monsters in Loki's urine track! About the surgery, every day is another one to give Loki the chance to let his lungs get stronger. But...also every day is a long day without the final surgery, how frustrating. But that breastfeeding! Mom I can't explain how proud I am of you. Unbelievable how you keep on pumping and practicing the breastfeeding. And dad, mom couldn't do this with your amazing support, The both of you earn a very big germ free hug X X!!

Lieve Loki,
Also from the far country of the Netherlands comes a warm, loving shower to you into your crib. Come on little fighter, keep as strong as you are! I bought you a very cool t'shirt size 68 so....grow, grow, grow!

And Grandma Janie, I also have seen the pacifier video over a million times, so cute!

we hadden ook beschuit met muisjes, leuk he, lieve groet van Greet

No UTI - what a relief.

28 mL is AWESOME. He is doing great with breast feeding, even though there are still some mL to go for a full feeding. Kudos for being so dedicated.

No news on the surgery is probably good news at this point.

Have a quiet weekend.

Dear Mom and Dad,

It is a great challenge on your patience. I sometimes do not know where my patience went with my almost 3-year old, so, I take a bow for you! And maybe it takes a while before our Lokikraamfeestje-vibes have reached the other side of the world. I am sure that as soon as they arrive, more news will come ;-)

Hang on and maybe it gives you more time for the breast.

Dear mom and dad,
It was a nice evening at Kyra's. It was good to come together and talk about Loki and the two of you. We collected some nice gifts and our energie went to Loki. You will hear more about it when Kyra comes to visit you.
What a relief that Loki hasn't got another infection. And indeed no news of any surgery is frustrating, but gives also time to strengthen (is this english?) Loki's lungs.
Also I am so proud of mom about the breastfeeding, I know it takes a lot of time and energie to pump, and you are doing this for three months already! And now the time is coming that you are getting rewarded for it, Loki is getting the hang of it! Good job to the three of you for that!
Big kiss, Maaike

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
