Doctors + Photos: Loki settles into home life

Today was a busy day. Once again, we visited two doctors in one day. In the morning, we went to Loki's regular pediatrician. He believes that the problems with digestion, lack of poop, and crankiness are a combination of not getting enough food and a fussy baby. The food presents a "chicken or the egg" question. Loki needs the food the get energy, and he needs more energy to be able able to eat without falling asleep. How do we break the cycle? We'll try returning to the NeoSure calorie supplement tomorrow, but in a smaller amount.

In the afternoon, we went to UCSF for an ultrasound and a visit with the urologist. He was very happy with the appearance of Loki's kidney and ureter! That is the best news. We are all hoping that Loki's two upcoming surgeries - the removal of the stent in his ureter and the repair of his hernia - can be done at the same time.

Well, it sounds logical, no food no energy. No energy, no food. This little dudie maludie is fighting his way into "normal" life. The foto's are every day a treat! Dikke kus, X

I'm so hapy seeing this pictures of the homelife. I know it takes a lot of energie and organisation to visit all those doctors. It's good to see the doctors to hear Loki is doing great and get answers to questions, but it doesn't give very much rest in the household. But you have your moments I can see. Enjoy them for the fullest (is that a word? aah, you know what I mean). I love the picture of Loki in the blue hoodie, playing with his hands, so sweet and cool at the same time.
I hope the food part is solved in a couple days. Good luck!

Lieve mom en dad,

I guess we don't see you in the pictures because your hair is going grey and you have big lines under your eyes from not sleeping? You definitely are the main characters in this story, apart from the dude of course! I am happy the results of the examination was positive. Isn't he a brave little man? It must give you confidence that the rest will be peanuts, even though you might as well be very tired and longing for some fresh air. At least now you can see what it is good for, and BIG steps are taken, hurray! Would love to talk to you soon, let me know when you have your own 'aware' time, for I wouldn't want to wake you up.

Lots of love, our laptop is being repaired, so soon more posts.

Love, again,

Kyra

Just wanted to say what a great Nana--I can see she has fallen under Loki's spell...charmed her into adoring attention. That's good--this fellow has quite a support system. Still--Lijn--hang in there--you must be so exhausted, and I know you hold yourself to the very highest standard in everything, but maybe try to rest when you can?

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
