With many, many, many thanks to Janet for taking all these beautiful pictures. It provides some comfort to see Loki is looking well, and ever so handsome!

What??? Mom and Dad are not coming in to see me?

But Janet is! As long as someone is here to cuddle:

Wow this must make you feel very relieved... Loki does look content. I hope for the best for tomorrow and will take many good vibes plus presents for little strong Loki Sky. We needed an extra suitcase, so you have a lot of support flying in tomorrow!

Hang in there, Jesse and Lijn! We feel with you (?dutch?) and hope the colds and the sorrows will vanish soon.

Kisses from a safe distance while we can, Kyra and Erwin

Kleine, lieve Loki,
Marsha wrote you very moving words on your due date. Your start in the world is a lot different from "normal". The start from mom, dad and you of being a family too.

But you showed us an incredible strenghth, power and feistyness. First to make your nest in mom, spend as much time as possible in there to grow and use every milimeter you needed. Then handle all the hospital hussle, being so amazingly tiny. Fighting your way against some nasty germs. Growing bigger and bigger. Move everybodys hart.

I remember the evening before I went home in december after visiting mom and you. I hold my hand on your little, warm, beautifull and so alive body and you smiled your mouth for a split second. I know this smile was a contraction in your face but....my hart melted! I was so proud of you and felt so blessed to be there seeing you for real. You know, the other side of the world where uncle Martin and I live is even further away then your carride to San Francisco!

That evening, you tried to breastfeed for the first time, another mile taken.
Mom and dad adapted so well to this new situation, where you came into their lives so early but so present and with a huge drive to be with them. They have a huge ammount of love in them for you (yeah, waht do you think! Such a handsome, friendly and strong little dudie-maludie. Everybody feels love for you!)

Since you are so strong and clearly have the intention to live a beautifull life in this world, I have absolutely no doubts about the good end of your kidney surgery. And since mom and dad are, despite the uncommon start of your life so connected with you there will be a real family-situation very soon. Out of whatever hospital, at home, cuddling whenever you want. Yes, also with your musical bear.
Good luck babylokisky, my thoughts are with you the upcomming days!

Dear Mama, Papa, and baby Loki Bear,
This too shall pass.
I know it is so hard. But Loki is a strong little boy, and he knows how much you love him--and because you have fought so hard for good care for him, he will continue to receive it. Brianna and I watched the pacifier sucking video together, as she is always very interested when I (every day!) check on "'Lijn's tiny baby boy (not so tiny anymore!). We still have his small gift, and look forward to delivering it soon. Surgery is just a terrible ordeal, there is no nice way to gloss over that. What matters is what happens afterward, when the pee comes out right as it should, when the pain recedes and Loki remembers that always, no matter what, that Mama and Papa come back, with their gentle touches, and their sweet faces (and in all the pictures, you two look silly happy with delight as if you were almost drunk with love--very nice!) smiling, whispering, stroking...
Thank you to all the staff from Alta Bates and CHO who support this wonderful family, and for all the work you do for little ones.
Love,
Cheryl and Brianna Flannery Theis

I enjoyed it every bit as much as Loki did! Glad I could help out in the cuddling department. Good luck at UCSF and with the surgery. I'll be checking the blog faithfully, but know Loki will do well; hasn't he always been a "feisty production?"
Knuffels,
Nurse Janet

p.s.: "Hello!" to Nana.

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
