In the right direction (updated) + Video: Loki's bear

I just got a short telephone call from the chief urologist. He said that "everything is going in the right direction," and that if this continues for 24 hours or so, then we will be "out of the woods." (In case that doesn't work for the Nederlanders, that means to be clear of all problems.) I also had a quick conversation with Mom, who was walking to the hospital. She said that more urine is coming out the right places and less from the wrong places. I never thought that I would be so excited about pee.

Update: I got some details from Mom. Loki's temperature is good, but his blood pressure remains high, for which he is getting a drug. His urine output is actually too great now, and thus his blood potassium is a bit low. There are still no indications of an infection from his blood cultures. The color is his skin is better. He is still on the nasal cannula at 2 L/min but at 21% oxygen (normal room air). Loki gets morphine if he hows signs of pain. He still may get transferred to Children's in Oakland, but Mom will try to keep him at UCSF.

Here is a short video from Friday, after the surgery but before the craziness. In it, Loki relaxes to his favorite song of his musical bear. Well, I am not sure what he thinks of it, but Mom is convinced that it is his favorite. Actually, my main purpose of putting this video up is to offer the bear's song, as Loki himself does not really do anything in the video. But he is still cute, of course.

Don't say he's not doing much - being cute is very hard work!

Glad to hear things are moving in the right direction--an old Yoruba proverb applies to all of this:
"Little by little, bit by bit". One more hurdle Loki is jumping over with the love and strength of his parents.

BTW--Jesse--of course you will not be calm and bored when he comes home--I just meant that relative to all of THIS, cuddling together on a Sunday morning reading the paper, drinking some coffee or tea, with Loki cuddled between you two will be far better than this--even if you haven't gotten a wink of sleep, at least it will be sleepless in your OWN BED!

For us another night is coming up with sweet dreams full of positive thoughts to and about Loki, so that tomorrow will be an even better day than this day!

Cheryl, I look forward to having Loki sleep peacefully in our own home, and I even look forward to him waking us up in the middle of the night! As we both know, *anything* is better than having one's child in the hospital.

Nice to hear Loki's favorite "bear" song. It seems like another bump is some kind of taken again. Opa Ruud will try to call mom and dad, he almost is in the 21 century, his ADSL internet is on its way, Yeah!!
Lieve Loki, lekker slapen en goed beter worden. Lieve Mom and dad, ook lekker slapen en beter worden/blijven. You are my hero's of the year. Kus, X

Marieke: I got a phone call from Opa Ruud, and provided him with updates. Thank you for keeping him in the loop.

Yes, everything is better than being in hospital, but for right now I hope he can stay at UCSF and doesn't need another transfer to CHO before going back to AB and home. I am very glad he is in such good care with amazing doctors indeed.

I am holding my breath for him to be well again.

He looks so peaceful in the video, and I love his doing 'nothing', especially the tiny little grunts.

Much love,
Mascha

i love how Loki is listening to this song...It is also a lot of the nurses at Alta Bates favorite, because we find ourselves humming it throughout the day, it is very calming...and we only know it through little Loki's musical bear :)

That is Loki's FAVORITE song. We could always tell he liked it best of all the musical bear's offerings. Now all his primaries hum it, too. Keep getting better, Loki-Doki-Artichokey. You want to be home for your four-month b-day, don't you?

About Loki Sky

Loki Sky is a special little man. He was a very early micropreemie, weighing only 610 grams (1 lb, 5 oz) after 24 weeks, 3 days gestation, born to an American Father and a Dutch Mother in Berkeley, California on October 18, 2008.

On January 11, 2009, while still in the hospital NICU, his one kidney stopped working. It was repaired after three surgeries. After spending time in three hospitals in three cities, Loki came home on February 17. He struggled with eating, and then stopped in July, leading to 8 days in the hospital, a failure-to-thrive diagnosis, and a NG feeding tube. On October 10, a minor surgery installed a G feeding tube. Another procedure replaced it with a new one, and then again with a Mic-Key button in Jan. 2010.

In August 2010, he and his parents moved to the Netherlands.
